In the lower third of the painting, the powerful entry and exiting of entities into the body of water represent journeys into the sub-conscious. Often in meditations and hypnosis, one is asked to visualise and scan their bodies in their mind’s eye, relaxing into the surface that one is rested on, feeling the pressure of one’s weight against the bed, and gradually feeling absorbed by the surface to begin an exploration of the deeper recesses of the mind. The depth of the water and its intensity reflects the focus of such an investigation.

Slightly above this section is the fiery evening sky. I continued with a hypnotic attitude, like the red storm in jupiter’s atmosphere, and wanted a sense of potency and purity to its color. By keeping the forms suggestive and flowing, I try to suggest a natural rhythm that is enveloping the scene in a nurturing way, despite all its intensity, it isn’t meant to be terrifying but to be radiant, like stage curtains framing a theatrical play.

The entities in this painting swirl and flutter in a way that I hope suggests the path that flowers and leaves take when falling. I want to suggest a lightness at times, almost as if the bodies are not solid but ethereal. The colors in which they become should be familiar but slightly hyper-real, like rare-gases.

The following is a small poem that accompanies the painting:

The Pilot of the Mind

In her breadth and soaring face

Finds and leaves behind

Arrives and falls apart

A wingspan between and beyond

Worlds and propulsions

A forever journey paused between blinks

The inking of thought into a life dedicated to

A secret sound

A cold hand warmed

A kiss whispered and kept in a pocket

A storm in one’s heart parts the sky

And waters the thirst for rivers of life
