The name comes from “Dzimba dzemabwe,” which means “houses of stone,” and this is where the name Zimbabwe originates.

The work depicts doilies in the process of being woven. Doilies were once a common decoration in many Zimbabwean homes. The piece carries a nostalgic element, as my mother used to weave doilies and export them to neighbouring countries. They were almost “sacred” objects in the home—once they were carefully arranged as decoration, disturbing them would often earn you a scolding. However, these objects that were once so important no longer hold the same role today.

The pill motif in the centre represents a temporary solution to long-standing problems, as I see a pill as a quick fix—something that buys time rather than truly solving the issue.

By combining these two elements, the work reflects on the present and the future, highlighting the fluidity of history and social constructs.

Il nome deriva da “Dzimba dzemabwe”, che significa “case di pietra”, ed è da qui che ha origine il nome Zimbabwe.

L’opera mostra centrini nel processo di tessitura. I centrini erano un tempo una decorazione molto comune in molte case dello Zimbabwe. Il lavoro ha una dimensione nostalgica, perché mia madre era solita tessere centrini ed esportarli nei paesi vicini. Erano quasi oggetti “sacri” in casa: una volta sistemati come decorazione, spostarli o disturbarli poteva facilmente attirare un rimprovero. Tuttavia, questi oggetti, un tempo così importanti, oggi non ricoprono più lo stesso ruolo.

Il motivo della pillola al centro rappresenta una soluzione temporanea a problemi di lunga data, perché considero la pillola come una soluzione rapida, un modo per guadagnare tempo piuttosto che risolvere davvero il problema.

La combinazione di questi due elementi parla del presente e del futuro, mettendo in luce la fluidità della storia e dei costrutti sociali
