ING:

This painting’s sense of an all encompassing sky is an embodiment of time. I wanted to create the sensation of being in the middle of a vortex of powerful forces, not necessarily to be consumed or swept away by it, but the sense of being able to behold and cradled by the nature of things as they are. I was also exploring a calligraphic style of applying paint, where the edges of the brushes must retain their shape as they glide across the surface. I think of this painting as a “low friction” painting. There should be an effortlessness in the motions and the accumulation of energy as the painting is built up. Although a sense of repetition is important to create the sublime effect I was aiming for, I needed to find solutions to create variations in angles and posture (in the angels). So a degree of idealised foreshortening or flattening at times is what I employed to tell micro-stories through the posture/poses of each figure. I want it to be the case that when examined up-close, one can find pockets of repose and gentle calmness even though when seen at the distance, the painting feels like a potent accumulation of forces. Contrast is always essential, and when I examine of the wall of sound that composers like Richard Wagner or bands like Swans, My Bloody Valentine have employed, it is clear that it is not as simple as turning up the volume or layering various instruments recklessly. One needs to layer them almost in a lattice like way, to give each voice space to peek through in its own way. These forms in my paintings are similarly layered, but not to cover each other up, just slightly staggered or superimposed, but still done with a free, uncalculated method. I rely a lot on my body’s sense-memory of what is the “right” move to make, as the painting is developed.

The motif that I’ve used repetitively in this painting are a form of bird/angelic beings, and I especially wanted to create wings where it aids in implying direction and serves as a good reason to add ornaments or a sense of precious detail by rendering every feather attentively. I also think of them as a counterpoint, both emotional and visual, where they seem to be rendered like butterflies in a hurricane, where through their lightness, they glide through a storm, unaffected, perhaps flourishing.
