Phlox is a painting that takes the compositional form of “Fall of the Damned” by Peter Paul Rubens as a starting point.
While the Rubens’ painting depicts the rebel angels being cast out of heaven, in my painting, what is portrayed is more a variety of variations of humanoid and amphibious lifeforms, populating a land. Instead of the theme of damnation, the theme is of integration, population and the primordial, stirring of life.
The thing I look for the most in this painting was “vitality”, I wanted the piece to look like it was ripening, blooming, coming to life, to reach its most saturated form, like how a flower just before full bloom has its most intense color. I wanted a work that was rich in intensity, but not sugary, not candied, more of the richness of the breaking of dawn, as a red sun cracks through the sky.
In ancient Taoist traditions, there is no concept of a single soul within in, but that we are made of 10 different spirits, through integration and harmonization, form what we think of as a unified spirit. And in this sense, I like to imagine from a distant perspective, how much of life becomes beautiful from a distance, like the stormy eye of Jupiter—up close it is experienced as fragmented lands and violent winds, but from a distance, it is the natural, slow, swirling progression of an eddy, building upon itself.
