ING:

My favourite aspect of this painting is the complementary colors and the introduction of hints of violets and golds. It is very difficult to introduce high saturation colors into a painting while keeping depth and a sense of volume and weight. So in terms of the final image, the distribution of forms, the variation of shapes and the stylistic “sliced” wings with a mix of quinacridone rose, burnt sienna, transparent orange and cerulean blues are what gives me a sense of pictorial satisfaction. I was also experimenting with the use of reds against black as a counterpoint, I think of these elements as jabs, slashes or bursts of energy (like chilli). They turn up a the volume in a different way, without necessarily being a formal container for a character, their presence in the painting can be simplified in order to serve the aesthetic/compositional role of helping shadows feel more “behind” and making the overall painting feel more vitalised. Another compositional experiment was that the angelic forms dissipate into the clouds, but these clouds take on a rhythmic ripple and this ripple is an important structural balancer for the overall image.

The title of this painting is named after a Taoist philosophical book by Ni Hua Ching. To quote the book’s introduction: “Nature progresses effortlessly from one season to the next, but on a subtler level humans also need to be periodically awakened from a spiritual hibernation in which the awareness of life's reality is deeply forgotten.”
